Looking for the most up-to-date recreational, historical and ecological information for the Auburn State Recreation Area? PARC's completely revised 416-page 3rd edition is now available.
Mystic Design's Laurel Mathe has redesigned the book format making it easier to access specific information on the river and canyons. The guidebook first published over 20 years ago includes a new color natural history chapter, with illustrations by John Muir Laws. The trails chapter has been completely revised with new maps, trails descriptions including the Western States Trail, natural and cultural history sidebars, activities to do while hiking with kids and contributions from the Canyon Keepers and local guidebook authors. A complete concise mile-by-mile whitewater chapter written by river guides includes: rapid difficulty ratings and descriptions, maps, geology, Gold Rush history and access information to the North, Middle and South Forks. The richly illustrated Native American River History chapter features Native American traditions as viewed through song, dance, basket making, acorn food preparation and creation myths. Romanticized stories and songs of the Gold Rush, complete with Charles Weed's historic photos of the Grand Flume on the Middle, and other photos from the early days of the Gold Rush are featured in the history chapter. The final pages of the guidebook are devoted to options for permanently protecting the American River.
