The
Confluence Winter 2005
Trails Maintenance Workshop
Saturday, February 26, 9:30 am to approximately
12 pm
The trails of the Auburn State Recreation Area (ASRA)
are one of the parks' greatest recreational assets. They offer a
myriad of opportunities to connect with wilderness and the complexities
of the natural world. The well over 100 miles of trails in the park
is constantly in need of repair and maintenance. Winter stroms,
intense multi-use and lack of use all take their toll. Come learn
about the rules and regulations regarding trail maintenance as well
as techniques to insure a "sustainable" trail. Retired
CA State Parks trail ranger, Greg Wells, will be conducting this
workshop on the basics of trail maintenance set forth in the CA
State Parks design and maintenance standards. Greg supervised the
construction of the Divide Loop and Clementine interconnect multi-use
trails. Most recently he returned to supervise the CCC's construction
of the final phase of the Ruck-a-Chucy portage trail, an area of
the river adversely affected by a failed dam construction attempt
in the 1930's. We will meet at ASRA headquarters on Highway 49 at
9:30 am on Saturday, February 26th. Greg will give a brief introduction
on trail maintenance rules, regulations, standards, tools and methods.
Following the introduction, we will explore the Confluence Area
trails for some hands-on trail maintenance work. Bring gloves and
tools.
