When he died perhaps a common thought was
how can we fill Frank’s shoes?
I remember them sitting next to the coffin,
the boots he wore at his last breath.
I most often think of him in river sandals
And shorts, “Keep it wild, keep it clean.”
Whether removing trash from the canyon,
or removing ignorance from conflict.
Reducing fear to permit hope.
Peace is not one conscious decision,
It is many, like the sands of the river.
These were not just acts of duty,
they were acts of love.
His shoes cannot be filled,
they were buried with him.
We must find our own shoes.
