The Confluence Summer 2003

Watercolor Painting on the American River with Juan Peña

Two separate sessions: Saturday, October 4, 9:30am-3:30pm or Saturday, November 8, 9:30am-3:30pm

Local watercolor artist Juan Peña will offer instruction in creating watercolor paintings of the river and canyons. Painting offers the opportunity to "see" and "distinguish" the complex mosaic of plants, animals, geology and light that form the nucleus of the American River eco-system. The lighting and subject possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Juan will offer instruction in various techniques to help you transfer your ideas to the watercolor paper. Juan is an accomplished artist who works and teaches from his studio, KASHAJUAN, in Auburn. Each session will involve a short, relatively easy hike, to the painting location in the proposed American River Confluence Parkway near Auburn.

Participants may want to bring a light, easy to carry folding stool. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. Bring your own supplies or we can provide them.

Cost is $10 per session using your supplies or $20 per session using ours.
Families of three or more will receive a discount.

Raku Clay Drum Workshop
at American River Nature Center in Coloma

Part I Sunday, November 2, 10am-4pm    Part II Sunday, November 9, 9am-5pm

Raku clay artists Eric & Paula Peach will guide participants through the process of making and playing the goblet shaped, "doumbek", drum popular in the Middle East, Oceania and North America. In the first session, the drums will be sculpted, using clay slab construction techniques on plaster "slump" molds. Participants are encouraged to select a theme such as: ocean, river, mountain, nature, cosmic, etc., and decorate their drum accordingly. In the second session, we will glaze and raku fire the drums.

After the reduction firing process is completed and the drums have cooled, goatskins will be glued to form the drumhead. Traditional drumming rhythms will be taught by Paula.

Eric and Paula Peach have taught numerous raku clay and music workshops to children and adults in the central Sierran foothills. Class size is limited. Cost is $55 for ARNC members $60 for non-members.
Call 530-621-1224 to register.
