Youth Adventures Program Rafts the River
Jamie and Joe participated in a Youth Adventures rafting trip
organized by PARC. Students from Placer and Colfax High and E
V Cain Junior High spent the entire day rafting the river and
learning about American River Canyon ecology, river guiding and
safety. Each student also glazed, raku fired a clay salmon flute
and learned to play a song play on their flute as part of the
days art and music program. Our Next Trip is Memorial Day, Monday,
May 28. Participants must be students 13 to 18 years of age and
residents of Placer County. They must also donate four hours of
community river service time. Volunteer to work at the American

From Rapids to Rituals
California State Parks is proud to offer From Rapids to Rituals,
River Interpretive Program Using the American River canyons as
a natural outdoor classroom, this unique program combines whitewater
rafting, wilderness camping and environmental education. The program
caters to teachers and other individuals with the ability to expand
the public’s awareness and appreciation of California’s natural
and cultural resources. By focusing on the American River watershed,
participants gain a better understanding of ecosystems and the
importance of maintaining healthy watersheds. Experts give interpretive
presentations at different locations along the river on subjects
such as art, botany, ecology, geology, history, physics and music.
The exchange of information continues well beyond the formal presentation.
Experiential and “hands-on” in nature, the activity-based approach
encourages quick learning while maintaining a high level of enthusiasm.
The impact of increasing ones awareness of the connection between
the individual and this local treasure cannot be overstated. The
canyons inspire presenters and participants to share their knowledge
with others. From Rapids to Rituals is truly a mentally and physically
uplifting experience. We at State Parks look forward to sharing
this experience with you! The course is accredited through the
University of San Diego and will be held July 17th – July 19th,
2001. The fee for the course is $300 and includes all meals, transportation
and educational components. Please contact Teresa Reed at (530)
885-5648, ext. 13 with any questions regarding the program.
Tahoe National Forest Seeks 6,000 Acres in North
Fork Watershed
Tahoe National Forest has put together an ambitious proposal
to acquire twelve parcels consisting of 6,100 acres in the North
Fork American River watershed. These roadless areas are part of
the “checkerboard” of former railroad lands currently owned by
timber giant Sierra Pacific Industries. Among the lands targeted
for acquisition are private inholdings lying along the federally
designated Wild and Scenic stretch of the North Fork American
River. The North Fork canyon in this area is exceptionally beautiful
and pristine; securing its protection from development and/or
timber harvesting would be a tremendous achievement. Please write
to Senators Boxer and Feinstein, as well as Congressman Doolittle,
urging their support for acquisition of the full 6,100 acres proposed
by Tahoe National Forest. Request that funding for the acquisitions
be secured through appropriations from the Land and Water Conservation
Fund. Also mention that the proposal has widespread support in
Placer County, including the backing of the Placer County Board
of Supervisors and the Foresthill Chamber of Commerce. Write to:
