The Confluence
Spring 2005
Canyon Keepers Busy in Seventh
Year
The
Canyon Keepers are getting ready for their seventh season volunteering
on weekends at the Confluence and at Upper Lake Clementine --
beginning on Memorial Day weekend. Their presence continues to
help make these areas safer and the experience of visitors more
pleasant.
The Jr. Ranger program which takes place on seven Saturday mornings
between June and early August will again be headed up this summer
by Roger and Sue Groghan, who always have new ideas to enhance
the experience of youngsters aged 8-12. If interested in more
information or in signing a child up, call 530 878-6008.
The long awaited self-guided Confluence Area Interpretive trail
is just about to be launched. Marker posts have been installed
along the walking route which encompasses a loop around the Mountain
Quarries RR Bridge and a jaunt up to Clarks Pool and back. The
soon to be published brochure will include relevant information
about the history, the geology and the ecology at each of the
ten stops along the way. This interpretive trail, along with fifteen
or more individual trail guides for the Auburn State Recreation
Area, will also be included in a new book that is being prepared
for publication.
Finally, it's time for training of potential new Canyon Keeper
members. Only two days are required in May or June (either May
14 and 21 or June 18 and 25). If necessary, one can choose day
1 and 2 from either series. Following training, members are asked
to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours engaged in member activities.
Dues for active Canyon Keeper membership remain at $5 and supporting
members are welcome with a suggested $15 contribution. As in the
past, active and supporting members are invited to participate
in four members-only events -- including discounted rafting trips
and visits to sites on private property such as Robbers Roost.
These may be found under the 2005 Calendar on the ASRACK web site
at www.psyber.com/~asra/asrack.htm (or search for Canyon
Keepers). The public is always welcome at the monthly meetings
(first Tuesday of each month except November and December) and
the monthly hikes.
