The Confluence
Spring 2004
Auburn to Cool Pedestrian Bridge
Plan Moves Forward
The California Department of Parks and Recreation
(DPR) has secured $1 million in funding through the Resource Agency
from Proposition 40. DPR has done some initial planning outlining
the planning, design and construction phases of the project. DPR
is currently developing a request for qualification/proposals
for the first phase of this project. The first phase will develop
and analyze several crossing alternatives, including trail bridge
locations and designs and alternate means of providing a trail
crossing of the North Fork of the American River between Auburn
and Cool. Until this first phase of planning and study is completed
DPR will not know if a trail bridge is feasible. DPR anticipates
this planning phase to be completed in one year. The design phase
will require an additional four months with construction tentatively
scheduled for late summer/fall of 2005.

PARC
would like to thank all the volunteers, sponsors and donors
that came together to make the Spring American River clean-up
one of our most successful ever. The Confluence river area
was cleaned of repulsive trash that had accumulated beneath
the Foresthill Bridge, the river's shore, and the canyon's
trails. Special thanks to ASRA Ranger Bill Deitchman and retired
PG&E employee Rex Maynard who coordinated removal of abandoned
steel culverts along Ponderosa Way. The family of Josh Haynes
donated the new "Respect the River" sign secured
to the Confluence information panel. The sign is dedicated
to all the volunteers that come together to make the river
a cleaner safer place for all to enjoy. The American River
Earth Day Clean-up was made possible through generous grants
from the Josh Haynes Family, the California State Parks Foundation
and PG&E. |
American River Paddle Safety
Day
The community is invited to join Protect American
River Canyons, and friends for a paddle and river safety day at
the American River on Saturday July 17th from 10:00 am to 4:00
pm on the calm pool beneath No Hands Bridge. Experienced river
paddlers will offer safety instruction and supervise the
use of a variety of river boats including inflatable kayaks, canoes,
hard shells and sit-on-tops provided by local river outfitters
Sierra Outdoor Center and Canyon Raft Rentals. A few tandem kayaks
will also be available to try out. The event is well suited for
those age 10 or over who have never been in a kayak. Boats will
be provided on a first come first serve basis. Follow the signs
from the Confluence Area, (Highway 49 crossing of the river),
to the beach area beneath No Hands Bridge. For more information
contact Roger Groghan at (530) 878-6008.
