The Confluence Spring 2003
Rivers and Tides-Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time
The
Placer High School Art Department, Protect American River Canyons
and the California State Parks Foundation proudly present a rare
film about an artist that is, in itself, a work of art. Rivers and
Tides is an extraordinary journey into the world and mind of Scottish
sculpture Andy Goldsworthy. A land-artist who uses materials from
nature to make site-specific works, Goldsworthy allows the elements
to have the last say in his beautiful creations as his ingenious
patterns of wood, leaves, stone and ice move and erode over time.
Impermanence and death are as much a part of nature as life each
inseparable from each other. German filmmaker Thomas Riedeisheimer
followed the artist for over a year in several outdoor locations,
intimately documenting his improvisational process and capturing
the serene spectacle of his works and their delicate changes. Riedeisheimer
reveals a man who is unable to live without creating art and the
connection to nature that it brings to him.
Although Goldsworthy's private and often ephemeral pieces have been
documented extensively in still photographs, this remarkable movie
uses the artists own voice to guide us through his process and help
us "... See something you never saw before, that was always
there but you were blind to it." The film moves at a very leisurely
and calm pace washing over its audience and soothing its viewers
with its lush photography and melodic score by Fred Frith. Rivers
and Tides is a sensual and poetic masterpiece.
Two screenings of the film will be open to the
public at the Placer High School Theater, located at High and Agard
Streets in Auburn, on Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13 at 7:30
pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm.
Seating is on a first come first serve basis. Admission is free.
