American River Clean Up 2001
Keep it Wild! Keep it Scenic! Keep it Clean!
|
| Many thanks to all the volunteers
that picked up trash and planted California poppy seeds in its
place along the river. Mr. Faulkner’s and Mr. Bobo’s Placer
High classes, the Canyon Keepers, CA State Parks staff and all
the great volunteers from the community made short work of the
mess under the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge and the Tamaroo Bar
area. We were able to fill a thirty yard dumpster provided by
Auburn Placer Disposal. Special thanks to Jack Schroeder who
single handedly cleaned Highway 49 from Auburn to the Confluence.

Sierra Club's Forestry Training Program
|
The Mother Lode Chapter's Forestry Training Institute
will get under way this fall. The initial workshop will provide
an overview of forest ecology and the management of timber harvesting
on private lands in California. Identical one day seminars will
be conducted in three locations in the Sierra foothills; participants
can choose the most convenient date and location. The dates
are November 3 (Nevada City), November 18 (Calaveras Co.), and
December 8 (El Dorado County). See registration information
below. Following the fall workshops, twenty participants will
be chosen to take the advanced training in the spring. We are
pleased to have been able to recruit a highly qualified training
team. Craig Thomas, the Conservation Director of the Sierra
Nevada Forest Protection Campaign, will be our training program
manager and forestry expert, Sue Britting is our mapping specialist
and forest ecologist, and attorney Tom Lippe will do a seminar
on applicable laws and legal precedents. From the program materials
two tools will be developed for future use: maps showing land
ownership and critical natural resources, and a handbook for
future reference by those commenting on Timber Harvest Plans.
Please register for the beginning seminar by phone at (916).557-1100
x 119, or by email at motherlode@mcsweb1.com. Along with your
name, address, and phone number tell us which session you plan
on attending. We will contact you with the exact location and
other details. Sierra Club membership is not required to participate.
For more information about the program, contact Terry Davis
at (916) 557-1100 x 108, or terry.davis@sierraclub.org.
