The ASRA Canyon Keepers wrapped
up their third season the end of September and are beginning
to plan for next year. Once again, reports from Jill Dampier
and her ASRA staff, indicate that a primary goal for the group
has been accomplished. Namely, the confluence area below Auburn
has enjoyed good seasonal crowds on weekends in a friendly and
safe environment. ASRACK members helped for the second year
with the ASRA sponsored Jr. Ranger Program (for youngsters ages
7-12 years) for seven consecutive Saturday mornings during July-August.
A crew from ASRACK joined forces with the folks from FATRAC
in helping to maintain as well as clear new trails devoted to
hikers and bikers. Monthly meetings this season featured excellent
guest speakers including Ranger Mike Lynch, Joe Madeiros, Gene
Markley, Eric Peach, Mimi Jenrick and Bill Wilson. Monthly hikes,
which are open to the public, have been well attended and we
have enjoyed the instruction from and company of several guest
leaders including: Ranger Rodi Lee, Joe Madeiros, Evan Jones
and Ernie Riley. Next year’s program will include ASRACK docent
led nature walks, historic bridges talks, and development of
new ASRA trail descriptions as well as a self-guided nature
walk in the confluence area.
